The First Tzar: Ivan the Terrible — Illustrations for Hobby World

I created all the illustrations for The First Tzar: Ivan the Terrible in 2021, during my first collaboration with Hobby World.

The main challenge was to make the images historically credible while giving each scene atmosphere and narrative purpose. I spent considerable time researching visual references for the Kremlin’s architecture, clothing, customs, and the material culture of the period depicted.

This research guided my approach to the setting and its details. Throughout the work, I aimed to balance historical accuracy with the needs of the illustration: a clear composition, an evocative atmosphere, and visual storytelling. I wanted the scenes to feel engaging while remaining grounded in their historical context.
